What is an AI Scribe?
An AI Scribe is a note-taking tool used to accurately and efficiently document your medical appointment, capturing essential details for your medical record. This way, your doctor can focus more on the conversation with you and less on manual note taking, enhancing the quality of care you receive. An AI Scribe supports but does not replace your doctor’s professional judgment. All medical decisions are made solely by your doctor.

How does it work?
Conversations with your doctor are transcribed as they happen. After verifying the contents of the note are accurate, your doctor will ensure a copy of the note is placed into your medical record. No recordings are stored by the AI Scribe software. 

 

Which AI Scribe is my doctor using?
There are many different types of AI Scribes. Not all doctors at the clinic may be using the same AI Scribe and your doctor may choose to change which AI Scribe they use in the future. A list of commonly used AI Scribes in Ontario is below. If you are interested to know which AI Scribe your doctor is using, please ask at the beginning of your appointment.

How is my personal health information protected?
Your doctor will only use an AI scribe that is compliant with Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), meaning your data:

• Is handled securely, with encryption and regular audits;

• Undergoes a rigorous de-identification process to remove personal identifiers;

• Is locally hosted within Canada; and

• Will not be used for secondary purposes.

 

Do I have to give consent?
You are not required to give consent, an AI Scribe will only be used if you give consent. You can also choose to opt-out at any time.​​​​
